Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan Previous Year Lower Division Clerk (LDC) Question Paper:

Comprehension: Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow.

Creative urban planning, high-tech public transportation system, efficient resource management and plentiful greenery make Singapore one of the best places to live in the world.

The first mega-city to put technology in use for road traffic management, Singapore has inspired several other cities to follow suit. During peak hours, Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) gantries, (tall metal frame that supports equipments such as cranes, signals or cameras) placed along main roads and motorways, charge the stored value card affixed on every vehicle. Such heavy fines are meant to discourage vehicle owners from taking overcrowded routes, thus decreasing the traffic and congestion on key stretches.

At the individual level, numerous mobile apps enable locals to book cabs or to decide about the best way to get to a particular destination. Citizens can thus map out their entire journey even before they leave home because of such real time apps.

Travelling is made easy in Singapore with the EZ Link Card, a stored value card, which allows commuters to access all modes of public transport, without having to worry about buying a ticket each time. Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), or a network of trains on five different routes, connects different destinations of this city-state. MRT authorities have further introduced 'free pre-peak hour' travel whereby people ending their train journey before 7.45 A.M. on weekdays at 18 specified MRT stations pay absolutely nothing. No wonder, this has considerable reduced the number of peak hour commuters.
